The University of South Carolina’s Marching Band performs for over 85,000 cheering fans every game day. Attend any home game and you will see Whitney Whittaker, one of two feature twirlers for the USC “Mighty Sound of the Southeast” Marching Band.
Twirlers joined together in a fun weekend of competition and learning at the Mid-America Celebration of Twirling contest and twirling clinic held in Omaha, Nebraska, November 6th and 7th. Sue Foehlinger, director of Sue’s Stepper-ettes Baton, Pom and Tumbling Studio, has hosted the Mid-America contest and clinic for 13 years.
In the October edition of the Drum Major Magazine, NBTA announced to it’s readers that the maximum age limit of 24.9 has been lifted for the 2004-2005 contest year. The notice reads, “effective immediately, the senior division will include 16 years and older.”
Florida State invaded the Carrier Dome Columbus Day weekend planning to hand a huge loss to the Syracuse Orange. In a surprise to fans of both teams, the game was a seat squirmer right to the last five seconds.
Strutting proud with the University of Georgia’s Redcoat Marching Band is feature twirler Hope Carrell. Carrell has been featured as a twirler for the UGA Marching Band for two years performing for a crowd of 90,000 football fans!
The 2004 Miss America pageant was held in Atlantic City, New Jersey on September 13th thru 18th. Miss California, Veena Goel, used her dancing talent and knowledge of current affairs to finish in the top five. The contest was won by Miss Alabama, Deidre Downs, an aspiring medical student.
Kansas NBTA twirling coach, Marla Harris has organized an informational seminar on the United States Twirling Association (USTA) to be held October 3rd, 2004 in Riverton, Kansas.
In the small town of Girard, Kansas, population 2,500, Beth’s Batoners has become not only a community staple, but also a nationally recognized team of twirlers.
